Cycling on Romney Marsh
‘The Cinque Ports Cycleway’ is the name given to our ambitious vision for a cycle route that will connect the historic Cinque Ports along the south coast of Kent.
Phase 5 Palmarsh to Dymchurch Redoubt
In 2020 DfT created an Active Travel Fund to enable councils to provide improved walking and cycling facilities. The scheme will create a safe and attractive 1.5-kilometre-long cycle route along the A259 between Palmarsh and Dymchurch Redoubt, providing a missing link in the Cinque Ports Cycleway. The new route will provide access to railway stations, schools and residential areas to the north and south. It will also enable leisure trips and provide an active travel option for the new housing at the Martello Lakes site.
Construction on Part 1 on the Dymchurch Road from the junction with Nickolls Road up to the start of The Redoubt is planned to start on the 15 November for 20 weeks. KCC is hoping to construct Part 2, around The Redoubt in 2022 once a land agreement has been confirmed.

Romney Marsh Countryside Partnership(RMCP)
The Romney Marsh Countryside Partnership carry out numerous free guided cycling events during the course of the year. Please visit the RMCP Notice Board to find out about current cycling events.
They also publish a pack of self-guided cycle rides around Romney Marsh, for both the wobbly novice or experienced cyclist. Beautifully illustrated by local artists the cycle routes range from 10 to 42 miles. You can pedal the quiet lanes of the Marsh On The Trail of Dr Syn keeping an eye out for smugglers, or experience the delights of the unique Marsh wildlife and learn about local Marsh legends. The Romney Marsh Meanders cycle pack has five self guided cycle routes around the flat, peaceful lanes of the Romney Marsh. The RMCP has waymarked each of the five routes with brown and white arrowed discs with a number in the middle. These metal discs are on oak wooden posts on the sides of the road or on existing metal road signs. Follow the numbered arrows which is relevant to the cycle route you are doing.
The pack can be obtained either from the RMCP or the Romney Marsh Visitor Centre.
The RMCP has installed a total of 32 cycle stands at various locations within the Romney Marsh area to complement the existing cycling infrastructure. The stands themselves have been designed to be sympathetic to the rural character of the Marsh landscape with oak uprights spanned by galvanised steel rails. Each stand carries a “Romney Marsh Cycle Stand” reflective logo.
Every year the RMCP and Shepway District Council organise the ‘Shepway Cyclethon’. This date is now firmly established in the calender with more than 200 cyclists of all ages coming together on a Sunday in June to cycle a route around the Marsh landscape. Everyone who joins in gets a free t-shirt and a free snack on return to the start at St Martins Field, New Romney. Drinks are also provided by Lathe Barn tea rooms at half-distance. The suggested starting point is New Romney, although the route can also be joined at Snargate if arriving by train at Appledore Station on the Ashford - Hastings line.
Snargate is a mile and a half or so from the station along the B2080 in the New Romney direction. New Romney is served by bus services which operate most days - see Plan Your Visit.

Circular Cycle Tour of Romney Marsh
Historic Churches of Romney Marsh
There are fourteen Historic Churches on Romney Marsh and following the map below will take you to all of them.
The National Cycling Route 2 runs right across Romney Marsh, from Hythe in the north east to Rye in the south west. From Hythe the route moves a few miles inland taking quiet country lanes through the picturesque villages of Romney Marsh including Burmarsh and Old Romney.
After passing the historic town of Lydd, it’s back onto a traffic-free cycle path most of the way into Rye, rejoining the road only at Camber.
For an alternative route between Hythe and Old Romney, take the A259 out of Hythe. After a couple of miles or so the road rejoins the coast and from here you can follow the seawall along the beachfront through Dymchurch and on to Littlestone.
Head inland, passing New Romney, to join National Route 2 at Old Romney.
National Cycle Route 2
The Royal Military Canal offers a variety of cycle routes so you can chose from a 4.2mile (7.6km), mainly of off-road ride following the banks for the tranquil canal or extend your route to 13 miles(20.9km) taking in some of the scenery of Romney Marsh.

Circular Tour New Romney, Ivychurch, Newchurch, West Hythe and Dymchurch
A circulat tour of just over 22 miles through the Romney Marsh countryside and coast road, taking in the viilages of Ivychurch, Newchurch, West Hythe and Dymchurch and the town of New Romney.

The trail can be short ambles around the churchyards to full-scale rambles across the marsh. Drive, cycle or walk, you choose.

Romney Cycles
You can hire bicycles from Romney Cycles in New Romney. They keep a good range of men's, women's and BMX bikes, all new or nearly new and good quality brands such as Claud Butler and Falcon.
Hire charges vary from £15 for a day to £45 for five days See Bike Hire Charges .
They are open 7 days a week, 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm on Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sunday.

Channel Bike Hire
Enjoy the coast and country of Romney Marsh with bikes delivered free of charge and the same day. All bikes serviced and tracked.
Hire charges are £15 per day for adults and £10 per day for chilfrdn. There is a discount for group and weekly hire.
They are open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, and on Saturday and Sunday by appointment.

Ebike Hire
You can hire Ebikes from the UK Electric Bike Centre on the seafront in Dymchurch. They are located at the top of the car park by the Ocean Inn on the seawall.

The Electric Bicycles are comfortable and reliable and have a large battery range of up to 60miles.
The UK Electric Bike Centre will be pleased to help you plan your adventure and can advise on the best routes and the likely distance you will be able to travel comfortably in a day on an electric bike. They provide maps and guidance of where to go and what to do.
Hire times can be very flexible but typical hires are from 10 am - 4 pm, Please note that if late, there will be a charge of £10 per 15 minutes late per bike after 5.15 pm. Half-day hire is also available.
