Greatstone Shingle Trail

The Greatstone Shingle Trail is a short walk that takes you along the tideline on Greatstone beach towards Greatstone car park, then across to a small part of the Dungeness Nature Reserve, before coming back along part of the beach.

It is a trail with snippets of information about the wildlife you can see, with ten information panels (see  below right), each with a joke.

The walk will take you about an hour. During your walk you will see a variety of plant, animal and insect life, all explained by the information panels available along the route.

Just look for the bumble bee (see right) and follow the arrows. See the directions and map below.

Directions and Map

Please follow these directions using the map below:

  • From the small car park opposite the Romney Sands Holiday Park (A), turn left and walk along the top of the sandy beach for several hundred metres following the panels
     
  • Then take the footpath over the dunes into the large Pay and Display Car Park  (B) near the Jolly Fisherman pub in Greatstone
     
  • Turn left out of the corner of the car park and walk down The Parade road for a hundred metres and then cross over the road and walk down a small alleyway to Merritt Road behind the houses.  (C)
     
  • Directly opposite walk down another alleyway and over the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway Track (D), taking care to look and listen for trains, and down a small alleyway onto Roberts Road and then turn right
     
  • At the end of the road, take a circular walk (E), following the panels around the shingle on the Dungeness Nature Reserve
     
  • Return to the end of Roberts Road and then walk down to the crossroads, turn left down Baldwin Road (F) over the railway track to The Parade (coastal track)
     
  • Cross over the road, turn right and shortly afterwards take the footpath (G) over the dunes, through the houses, on to the beach.  Turn right and you will end up back at the Romney Sands Holiday Park (A)
